I suspect part of the reason the books are out-of-print is that the word "stupid" is used frequently, and that the word is not something considered acceptable to be used around children, or by children. So - while you say the series is very "popular" - it would cost someone quite a bit of money to actually OWN the books in the series, as the cheaper copies are selling for more than $20 on Amazon.
